Charles and Jeff Munns - Family Tradition in Naval ROTC
Midshipman Jeff Munns '03

I am a senior in the NROTC program at Harvard University. I have been accepted into the Nuclear Power
program of the Navy and am on my way into the submarine service once I graduate. My decision to go into
submarines was influenced in many ways by what I saw growing up, for my father is a submariner as well.

My father RADM Charles L. Munns, USN, graduated from the Naval Academy in 1973. Previous to his 4 years
there he did one year of NROTC at Iowa State. His career has included being the Commanding Officer of the
USS Richard B. Russell (SSN-687). He has also been Commodore of Developmental Squadron 12, as well as
Commander Submarine Force Sixth Fleet; and Commander, Fleet Ballistic Missile Submarine Force in
Naples, Italy.

He received a Bachelors of Science Degree in Physics from the US Naval Academy in 1973 and a Master of
Science Degree in Computer Science from the University of Colorado in December 1980. He attended MIT's
Seminar XXI on Foreign Politics and International Relations in 1993-4. His personal decorations include the
Distinguished Service Medal, Legion of Merit, Meritorious Service Medal, and the Navy Achievement Medal.

My decision to serve in the Navy was due in large part to the excellent example my father has always set for
me. Growing up in his stead, I saw how one could serve our nation with honor and pride while still having a
good private life and lots of adventure. He has always been an inspiration to me and will continue to be one
as I now enter the service in my own right.
