CDR Lee joined the Navy in 1986 after studying both chemistry and physics at DePaul University, the University of Arizona, and Oak Ridge National Laboratory. Upon completion of Officer Candidate School in Rhode Island, and initial Naval Nuclear Propulsion training in Idaho, he served as a division officer onboard USS RICHARD B. RUSSELL (SSN 687). There, he deployed on five mid-Pacific deployments.
In 1990, he received a brief assignment to the National Geographic Society expedition that located and surveyed the German battleship BISMARCK in the North Atlantic Ocean. He was subsequently assigned as a project engineer in the office of the Chief of Naval Operations.
CDR Lee reported as Navigator onboard USS HONOLULU (SSN 718) in 1993, completing western and eastern Pacific deployments, as well as an extensive ship’s modernization period with that ship. He was then assigned as the Special Technical Operations Officer to Commander Pacific Fleet in 1996. His most recent sea duty as Executive Officer in USS MICHIGAN (SSBN 727 BLUE) spanned three strategic patrols, serving until 2001.
CDR Lee arrives to relieve as Commanding Officer USS ALABAMA (SSBN 731 GOLD) from duty in Joint Plans and Operations Division in Supreme Allied Command Europe and as NATO Liaison Officer to U. S. European Command.
CDR Lee has received the Defense Meritorious Service Medal, the Navy Meritorious Service Medal, five awards of the Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal, two awards of the Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal and several unit and service awards.
