CAPTAIN David S. Herbein, USN Professor, Naval Construction & Engineering
CAPTAIN Herbein, a native of Reading, PA, was commissioned from the U. S. Naval Academy in 1975 with a B.S. in Marine Engineering. He served as a division officer on USS RICHARD B. RUSSELL (SSN 687) and Weapons Department Head on USS ANDREW JACKSON (SSBN 619 (G)).
He was designated an Engineering Duty Officer in 1984, and obtained his Master of Science in Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering, and Naval Engineer degrees from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1987.
Captain Herbein's first industrial tour was at Mare Island Naval Shipyard, and subsequently served as Repair Officer on USS CANOPUS (AS 34), in Kings Bay, Georgia, and Operations Officer at Portsmouth Naval Shipyard in Kittery, Maine.
Captain Herbein was Deputy Director of the Submarine Design and Systems Engineering Group of Naval Sea Systems Command (SEA05) before reporting as Commanding Officer of the Submarine Maintenance Engineering, Planning and Procurement (SUBMEPP) Activity in Portsmouth, New Hampshire. He is currently serving as the Professor of Naval Construction and Engineering in the Department of Ocean Engineering at MIT.
