WASHINGTON -- President George W. Bush nominated Commander, U.
S. Joint Forces Command, NATO Supreme Allied Commander
Transformation, Navy Adm. Edmund P. Giambastiani as Vice Chairman
of the Joint Chiefs of Staff in a ceremony at the White House today.
The president also announced the nomination of the current Vice
Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Marine Gen. Peter Pace for the
position of Chairman.
“For the past two and a half years, Admiral G, as his friends, and now
his president calls him,” Bush continued, “He has been serving our
nation while wearing two important hats. As commander of the
United States Joint forces Command in Norfolk, he has been
transforming our armed forces so they can better work together to
defeat the threats of the 21st century.
“For the past two and a half years, Admiral G, as his friends, and now his president calls him,” Bush
continued, “He has been serving our nation while wearing two important hats. As commander of the United
States Joint forces Command in Norfolk, he has been transforming our armed forces so they can better
work together to defeat the threats of the 21st century.
“As the first Supreme Allied Commander for Transformation, he’s been leading the effort to bring reform to
the NATO military, so our alliance is prepared for the threats of tomorrow.”
The president expressed his appreciation for both men’s willingness to assume their new duties.
“We still face ruthless adversaries who wish to attack our country,” Bush said. “But with the leadership of
men like these, the outcome of this struggle is assured: America will defeat freedom’s enemies and ensure
the security of our country for generations to come.”
Giambastiani spoke briefly after Pace thanked the president for the opportunity to continue serving the
nation.
“For 35 years,” Giambastiani said, “I’ve had the privilege of wearing this navy uniform. For me, and for my
family, it has been a wonderful experience and also a great honor.
“I look forward to working and continuing to serve on the behalf of those wonderful human beings, those
members of our armed forces, those people in uniform. They are doing truly remarkable things around the
world, every single day. And they deserve nothing less than our full support.”
Giambastiani has 13 years of experience as a commanding officer. His extensive operational assignments
included commanding Submarine NR-1, the Navy’s only nuclear-powered deep diving ocean engineering
and research submarine, and USS Richard B. Russell (SSN 687) where the crew was awarded three
consecutive Battle Efficiency “E”s, three Navy Unit Commendations, and two Fleet Commander Silver
Anchors for excellence in enlisted retention.
He also led Submarine Development Squadron Twelve, as the first director of strategy and concepts at the
Naval Doctrine Command. He also served as commander, Submarine Force Atlantic Fleet; commander,
Submarines Allied Command Atlantic; and commander, Anti-Submarine and Reconnaissance Forces Atlantic
in Norfolk, Va. In this assignment, as the Navy’s operational submarine leader, Giambastiani focused the
submarine force on the Nation’s new security challenges and worked to integrate submarine capabilities in
Navy and joint operations.
Other assignments ashore as a flag officer were as director of the Submarine Warfare Division on the staff
of the Chief of Naval Operations; deputy Chief of Naval Operations for Resources, Requirements, and
Assessments (OPNAV N8) and as the deputy chief of staff for resources, Warfare Requirements and
Assessments for the commander, U.S. Pacific Fleet.
Giambastiani is a native of Canastota, N. Y., and graduated from the U.S. Naval Academy with leadership
distinction in 1970. He served as the senior military assistant to Secretary of Defense Donald H. Rumsfeld
prior to assuming command of U.S. Joint Forces Command in 2002.
“Mr. President there are a lot of challenges ahead,” Giambastiani said as he concluded his statement. “I
look forward to working with you, General Pace, Secretary Rumsfeld and this great team in the future to
meet those challenges. Thank you, sir.”
