Captain Daugherty graduated with distinction from the U.S. Naval Academy in 1981 with a Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering.
After nuclear power and submarine training, he served on the USS OLYMPIA (SSN 717). Later, he served as the Engineer Officer on USS RICHARD B. RUSSELL (SSN 687), completing several deployments. During his tour, the ship was awarded three Battle “E”s and multiple unit awards including a Presidential Unit Citation. As Executive Officer, he completed three patrols on the USS TENNESSEE (SSBN 734) (BLUE), receiving the CSS-20 Battle “E”, the Golden Anchor for personnel retention, and multiple department awards.
Captain Daugherty completed five patrols as Commanding Officer on USS RHODE ISLAND (SSBN 740) (BLUE) from September 1997 to April 2000, receiving the CSS-20 1998 Battle “E”, the Golden Anchor, and multiple department awards.
His shore assignments include Officer in Charge MTS-626; Head of Navy Manpower on the staff of the Chief of Naval Operations; Operations Officer for Commander, Submarine Group EIGHT, and Commander, Submarine Squadron SIXTEEN.
Captain Daugherty is authorized to wear the Legion of Merit with two Gold Stars and the Meritorious Service Medal with four Gold Stars in addition to several other personal and unit awards.
