I remember during construction, we were impulsing weapon shapes to check torpedo tube
alignment. Things had been going well, and the shipyard had a small tug out collecting the shapes
after we shot them. We had a watch stationed in the sail to make sure that no vessel crossed out
path while we were shooting the test shapes. Just as the all clear was given, the small tug from the
shipyard cruised out from the end of the pier and into our line of fire. Just then, we shot a shape
which hit the tug broadside. As luck would have it, the shipyard had a dry-dock open (which I
believe was to be used for us). As the tug limped into the dry-dock, many pumps were needed to
keep keep it afloat. The next morning, someone had painted a tug on the ship's sail. We already
had our first "kill", and we were not yet a commissioned vessel! - Gary Wing
